22 August 2006 Top tips for school-run drivers
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a set of tips to help drivers avoid making claims on their car insuranceas a result of the school-run.
IAM has listed a few handy points for school-run drivers to bear in mind, which will help keep them safe and avoid gridlock.
Figures suggest that around 70 per cent of drivers break the speed limit while taking their children to school and a large number of pupils are involved in accidents near their home on residential roads.
The amount of traffic created by the school-run is also vast, with a 20 per cent increase in the number of cars on the road, putting pedestrians at greater risk.
Although the IAM admits that the school-run looks destined to be around for some time, the group is keen to help drivers avoid running into trouble.
Amongst the advice is a plea for drivers to remain within the speed limit, as well as suggesting that people car share and allow plenty of time for the journey.
The IAM also asks drivers to park considerably and safely and to avoid parking on the yellow 'zig-zags'.
The final suggestion is one which the IAM knows may not prove popular; they ask parents to avoid taking the car altogether.
