18 August 2006 Brummie sat nav voice puts drivers off

Drivers have suggested that satellite navigation (sat nav) systems which had a Birmingham accent to provide directions would be most likely to drive them to distraction.

In a survey of over 1,000 motorists carried out by sat nav provider CoPilot Live, just two per cent of people would want to have a navigation system in their car which had a brummie accent.

Other dialects performed considerably better, with over half of respondents saying they would prefer a system which spoke the Queen's English.

While 19 per cent said they would enjoy the lilting tones of a southern Irish accent, eight per cent supported a Welsh speaking system.

Bernard Lamb, of the Queen's English Society, told Reuters: "What matters most is a form of English that is understandable by the majority."

The survey may provide food for thought for prospective vehicle and car insurance purchasers, with protection for a sat nav system included in comprehensive cover.
