17 August 2006 Speed cameras 'more prevalent' on UK roads

Speed cameras are becoming an increasingly used method of deterring those driving over the limit.

According to research carried out by the Auto Express Magazine the ratio between police patrol cars is growing ever larger.

Its survey showed that the ratio was one car to almost six cameras in London and one in seven in the West Midlands, the highest national ratio.

David Johns, editor-in-chief of Auto Express, explained that this trend was "a really worrying situation for honest motorists because Gatsos [speed cameras] and other speed traps can do nothing to tackle more serious crimes such as drink driving".

Citing the fact that many of the patrol cars used by the police were top of the range models, Mr Johns speculated that investing in cheaper vehicles would allow for more to patrol the streets, a move which might give more peace of mind to those who have invested in car insurance.
