17 August 2006 Officials targeting non tax-paying drivers

Officials are clamping down on those people driving in the Worcester area without an up-to-date tax arrangement.

Police in the region believe that almost 45,000 drivers have not paid the required tax and contractors have been organised to clamp or impound such cars.

Those vehicles which have not been claimed within a seven-day period could be clamped, reports the Express and Star.

Roads minister Stephen Ladyman told the paper: "The clampdown on car tax evasion is great news for law abiding motorists and bad news for criminals. We are committed to helping reduce car crime."

It has been mooted that tougher enforcement of the tax rules will create safer roads to drive on, due to the fact that car tax can only be purchased with a valid MOT and car insurance certificate.
