16 August 2006 Scottish drivers 'reducing mileage'
Scottish citizens appear to be taking up the challenge of using more environmentally friendly modes of transport.According to the Scottish Executive, people north of the border drove on average 150 miles less on major roads in 2005 than the year before, only the second decrease since the 1970s.
The survey also showed that walking, cycling and the use of public transport had all increased.
The figures also showed that some five per cent less people were injured in 2005, a statistic which might be of interest for those taking out car insurance.
A spokesman from the Scottish Executive explained: "Changing people's travel behaviour takes time. It is not something which happens over night.
"We need not only public transport that provides a service that people want to use, we need a quality public transport service."
