16 August 2006 Car insurance crack down
The number of road casualties in Hertfordshire has decreased following legislation introduced last year to stop motorists driving without car insurance.Since laws which form part of the Serious and Organised Crime Act were introduced last year, the number of road deaths reported in the county has almost halved, website This is Hertfordshire reports.
Having been given a licence to seize cars being driven by motorists without insurance, almost 5,000 vehicles have been either destroyed or recovered by their owners.
Under the arrangement, drivers have seven working days to prove they have the required insurance documents for their vehicle, on top of which they will have to pay a £105 recovery charge.
Vehicles not recovered within two weeks of having been picked up will be destroyed.
Chief Constable Whiteley of the Hertfordshire Constabulary told the website: "The aims of the legislation are to improve road safety and deny criminals the use of the roads."
