14 August 2006 One-touch device to provide car breakdown alerts
The frustration of a broken down car may be eased following the development of a new product by BT.Known at this stage as B-Call by engineers, the new system would enable those people who had experienced a breakdown to press a device which would alert services to the problem.
It is also believed that once the system had been developed it would be able to provide comprehensive information about the cause of the breakdown, reports the Times.
B-Call would also be able to provide specific information about a driver's location, with a recent survey by AA showing that half of motorists do not know where they are when they break down.
BT's product is just one of many which have been developed to tend to the needs of those people who have invested in breakdown insurance.
Under EU legislation, it may be stipulated that by 2009 all cars are fitted with such devices in order to negate the annoyance factor of a breakdown.
