11 August 2006 Road hole swallows car
A stretch of road in Nottinghamshire has highlighted the need for comprehensive car insurance to cover drivers for unexpected accidents. The B6034 Ollerton Road, near Worksop, was the site of a bizarre accident that left one driver in hospital with neck injuries and several cars damaged as a consequence.
A hole, reported to be one metre deep, opened up on the road and one driver was unable to avoid it. Other cars that managed to steer around the hole were damaged in the process of doing so.
"We are investigating what caused the hole – at this stage we don't know whether the driver went into a hole that had appeared over time or whether the road collapsed when the car went over it," a Nottinghamshire County Council spokesperson said.
The unexpected nature of the accident highlights the benefits of having car insurance, which is legally required before taking to the road.
