10 August 2006 Integrated system helps police fight crime

While comprehensive car insurance cover can help you sleep easily at night, it's always good to know that the police are taking that extra step to keep your vehicle safe.

Dorset Police has teamed up with BMW to make a fully integrated network within police cars, enabling the police to react quicker to call outs and access information where and when they need it.

"Investing in the right equipment and technology means that we will be able to meet the needs of communities in Dorset by delivering operational policing at its best," said Paul Chick, Dorset Police business project manager, according to This is Dorset.

"The system has the potential to increase the amount of time an officer will spend out of a station and on patrol, thereby ensuring that members of the public are aware of an even more highly visible police presence."

This should help prevent car crime, with satellite navigation systems in the BMW 530d, BMW X5, Ford Mondeo ST220 and Ford Focus police cars helping the long arm of the law track down car thieves quicker.

Speed detection and number plate recognition are two of the other integrated features of the new system.
