09 August 2006 Police warning over speeding drivers
Police have issued a warning that they are clamping down on speeding motorists after catching ten drivers motoring over 100mph in just one weekend. These drivers will get points added to their licence, which will incur higher car insurance premiums, while one driver clocked at 117mph may lose his licence.
"In the middle of the national summer road safety campaign, I am astonished and very disappointed to see that so many drivers are still prepared to put their lives and the lives of others in such great danger by driving at these crazy speeds," said Chief Inspector Tom Forrester of Grampian Police.
Younger drivers already pay high premiums for car insurance and adding points to a driving licence can quickly make car ownership unaffordable.
Yet with the police on more intensive patrols, collection of points becomes a greater possibility for speeding drivers.
With Chief Inspector Forrester adding that "just one mistake" could be fatal at high speeds, higher car insurance premiums may not be the only price that speeding motorists pay.
