08 August 2006 Sat nav systems are hot property for drivers and thieves

The importance of third party, fire and theft cover for drivers has been emphasised recently in the county of Lancashire.

An alarming rise in the number of satellite navigation (sat nav) thefts has been observed, with damage to cars often a by-product of such thefts.

Sat nav systems are growing increasingly popular as a convenient and helpful way to find a route without the need to page through a road map or atlas. However, in Bolton they are also proving popular for thieves.

An average of one sat nav system is stolen from a car each day in the town, police say.

"With more drivers using these systems, we have seen quite a sharp increase in thefts over the last couple of years," said Sergeant Ian Brammer, according to website This is Lancashire.

"Drivers need to make sure they are not an easy target by removing the system from show and preferably taking it with them along with the cradle and any other items which might alert thieves."

Drivers with sat nav systems are encouraged to mark their technology with details including a postcode and house number.
