08 August 2006 DfT plans slammed by road safety campaigner

Proposals by the Department for Transport (DfT) to reduce the speed limits on urban and rural roads across the UK have been slammed by a road safety campaigner.

It has been announced that the DfT has called on local authorities to review speed limits in their jurisdiction in the next five years, with plans to cut the limits rumoured to be in the pipeline.

In fact, the DfT has said that any indication that areas wish to cut the speed limit of their 30mph zones to 20mph will be "encouraged and supported".

However, the move that could see more drivers penalised for breaking the law and thus a potential rise in those drivers' car insurance premiums has been rebuffed by Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign.

"If we want safer roads we must look at the psychological factors that underlie crashes. By tending to deskill driving these proposals will make road safety worse," Mr Smith said.

"The Department for Transport is clearly blinded by its own 'speed kills' propaganda and is not fit for purpose. It does not understand the process of safe driving and as such is not competent to devise road safety policy."
