07 August 2006 New cameras to catch cheeky speeders

Motorists in Northern Ireland will have to watch their speed on the Belfast to Dublin road more carefully than in the past thanks to a new type of speed camera.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has unveiled the Speed Enforcement Camera System (Specs), which measures the average speed of a car over a four-mile distance.

That means those drivers who slow down just for the speed trap will be forced to drive at much safer speeds for greater periods, something the PSNI wants to see implemented country-wide.

"We are looking at other stretches of roads where it's suitable. It is likely that in the future we will have others," said assistant chief constable Roy Toner, according to UTV.

"It is early days in terms of where we site them but we will be looking at this over the next 18 months to two years."

Fixed penalty fines will be issued to anyone caught speeding and it could lead to points on your licence, something that could drive up car insurance premiums.
