07 August 2006 On the road to national tolls?
British drivers could be encouraged to look for a cheaper car insurance provider if new plans to install toll roads across the UK come into effect.A leaked ministerial letter published in the Sunday Times revealed that plans to cut congestion will see toll roads introduced in cities and on trunk roads. With this extra expense, motorists could look to save money elsewhere.
Black boxes would be fitted to the cars to measure how far they have travelled, in a system slightly different to the tolls seen on the M6, for instance.
This will mean drivers will be charged on how far and when they travel, rather than a set charge for each time they use the roads concerned.
"The main purpose of the bill would be to support our efforts to cut congestion and improve public transport," Douglas Alexander, the transport secretary wrote, according to the newspaper.
"It would also help to pave the way for a national road-pricing scheme in the medium to long-term."
The congestion charge currently in operation in London costs drivers £8 per day.
