04 August 2006 Police seize uninsured vehicles
Police in Lothian and the Borders have seized 219 cars in the past two months as part of the crackdown on drivers without a driving licence or car insurance.Since legislation was passed two months ago, police have been able to seize cars from anyone who does not have these most basic pieces of documentation, with the future possibility that cars could be crushed if the situation is not rectified.
In fact, 72 cars have met this fate because their drivers did not claim their vehicles back with proof of car insurance and a driving licence. A three-figure sum is also required to release the car.
The last two months have seen a Vauxhall Astra Sri Turbo 170, a Mercedes 208 Sprint, a Suzuki Vitara, a Honda CRV and Ford Transit pick-ups all seized by the police in the area.
"The problems caused by people driving without insurance can be devastating, especially to those who are victims of road accidents caused by someone driving illegally," said chief inspector Kenny Buchanan, of Lothian and Borders Police's road policing branch.
"It will also disrupt criminals as there is no doubt in my mind that some of the vehicles are being used for illegal purposes."
