03 August 2006 RoSPA backs decision on mini-motorbikes

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has said that it backs the decision by the Home Office to clamp down on the problem of mini-motorbikes.

Proposals that would see points added to driving licences – which could drive up car insurance premiums in the future – will hopefully deter anyone from riding the bikes illegally in parks and on public highways, RoSPA has said.

"This announcement is a good step, but further measures to control and prevent accidents are still needed," said Peter Cornall, RoSPA head of leisure safety.

"There are hundreds of thousands of these so-called 'toys' in the UK. Thought needs to be given by local authorities to providing safe riding places as has been done for skateboards and BMXs."

As well as the car insurance harming points, people using the mini-motorbikes illegally run the risk of having their bike crushed.

Mr Cornall also pointed out the need for "responsible selling" in the future, to ensure that buyers are also informed and encouraged to purchase the recommended safety equipment.
