03 August 2006 Which?: Smaller cars are more reliable
Smaller, cheaper cars are more reliable than bigger motors, which often have higher car insurance premiums, according to the latest research.A survey carried out by consumer watchdog Which? has revealed that the most reliable car in Britain is the small-but-cheap Honda Jazz.
Retailing at usually under £9,000, the Which? survey found that during its tests on more than 400 model and 35,500 vehicles, the Jazz didn't break down and had only a few minor problems.
This meant that the Jazz was ranked as the most reliable car with a score of 95 per cent, beating off the competition from the Honda Accord and CR-V, Mazda 3, Renault Clio, Toyota Corolla, Vauxhall Corsa and Subaru Forester, which all received a score of 92 per cent.
Bottom of the pile for reliability was the Ford Focus C-Max. However, the survey also considered customer satisfaction. In this category, the named and shamed were Alfa Romeo and Chrysler, with both brands finishing bottom of the table on 31 per cent.
"Good news for consumers – some cheaper cars are very reliable," said Neil Fowler, editor of Which?
"Several expensive models need to up their game to compete. And several franchised dealers who repair 'prestige' cars need to raise their standards too."
