02 August 2006 Boy-racers causing alarm
A committee of MPs has highlighted the problem of boy-racers on the UK's roads. The Transport Committee, which is made up of MPs from different political parties, described the number of crashes caused by boy-racers as "alarmingly high".
A report has found that male drivers between the ages of 17 and 20 years old are ten times more likely to die in a crash than those aged between 35 and 54.
Young men are traditionally seen as a high-risk group when it comes to getting car insurance and these latest statistics do little to dispel that theory.
MPs are now calling for more training, tougher tests and a longer probation period for youngsters after they past their test.
These proposals have previously been rejected by ministers, but MPs are adamant that changes should be made.
In addition to the statistics regarding boy-racers and crashes, the committee also condemned figures relating to the number of assaults on test examiners.
In just one year, 33 attacks and 348 cases of verbal abuse were recorded, numbers the committee described as "alarming".
