Funding for street lights may cut insurance claims

Government plans to invest £700 million in lighting city streets across the UK are being hailed as a move towards cutting vehicle crime and reducing car insurance claims.

Transport minister Gillian Merron was singing the praises of the new scheme after the extra funding was announced.

In total, 15 local authorities have expressed an interest in the project and they will now be asked to outline a plan for better lighting in their area.

Ms Merron says that with the right planning, the lighting scheme could have a big impact on reducing car crime.

"Better lighting means a reduction in crime and the fear of crime, less light pollution and a safer, more user-friendly night-time environment for everyone," she said.

"I am very pleased that local authorities are using this PFI (Private Finance Initiative) funding to deliver real benefits to drivers and pedestrians alike."

If the scheme proves to be successful in reducing vehicle crime many drivers may find that car insurance premiums will be reduced over time.
