28 July 2006 Female drivers join US racing scene
A group of female drivers have taken the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) by storm. The women have muscled their way into the male-dominated racing scene to show off their skills and banish any prejudices, reports the Salt Lake City Weekly.
If car insurance statistics are taken into account it could be argued that the ladies stand a much better chance than their male counterparts in staying on the track, but these drivers are also intent on proving that they have the will to win.
The women have received a largely positive welcome to the racing arena and some believe that their presence is also bringing out the best in the male drivers.
Driver Bobby Stato says it would probably "sting" a bit to lose to a woman, leading to an increase in competition among the men.
"I think the women we race against are really competitive - every bit as capable as any guy out there," he said.
"In some ways, they may even have a slight advantage because they tend to have quicker reaction times. More women should do it," added Mr Sato.
National statistics in the UK show that women tend to be involved in fewer accidents than men.
Casualty rates in 2001 put men well ahead of women, with males 44 per cent more likely to be injured in an accident.
These kinds of statistics come up year after year and may be why female car insurance premiums are often lower than those for men.
