28 July 2006 Vans targeted by thieves

Van owners are being warned to take precautions when leaving their vehicles unattended after a spate of break-ins in Surrey.

Police say thousands of pounds worth of tools have been taken during the raids and drivers are being forced to claim on their van insurance, reports website icSurrey Online.

East Surrey has been highlighted as a hotspot for thefts, with vans becoming the target of choice among criminals.

Police are telling van drivers to remove tools from their vehicles when they are left unattended over night, to avoid having to make a claim to their insurance provider.

"When tools are stolen it can cause a great deal of stress for the owner, particularly if they are self-employed," said superintendent John Boshier.

"Apart from the hassle of trying to replace them, it is often very costly and can provide a major blow to small businesses.

"There are, however, a number of steps van owners can take to deter thieves, including removing their tools and work equipment if their vehicle is unattended for a lengthy period," he added.

Police are also advising drivers to fit alarms to their vehicles, remove sat nav systems from view and mark all major items of property.
