27 July 2006 Drink driving reaches record levels in London

Recent hot weather has been the catalyst for an increase in the number of people driving while drunk.

That is according to the Metropolitan Police which says the number of Londoners caught drink driving rose to record levels during June.

The Met's traffic unit arrested 169 people for drink or drug driving between June 5th and July 5th.

The arrests were part of the force's Summer Drink Drive campaign and the statistics have left officers extremely concerned.

"Whilst I am delighted with the success of the campaign, I am greatly concerned that despite the very real danger drink driving poses, people are seemingly ignoring the warnings," said Chief Superintendent Charles Griggs.

"The continuing warm weather throughout the summer has encouraged socialising, but the increase in arrests has proved that we will not tolerate drink or drug driving," he added. "Those who continue to drink or drug drive will be caught."

In addition to the hot weather, the football World Cup is also thought to have been a factor in the inflated number of arrests.

The Metropolitan Police traffic unit will continue to carry out spot-checks on drivers throughout the summer months as part of its campaign to clamp down on drink and drug driving.

Motorists under the influence of alcohol are more likely to be involved in an accident, which could lead to a car insurance claim.
