27 July 2006 Jail for "Britain's worst driver"

"Britain's worst driver" has been jailed for getting behind the wheel whilst banned for a 48th time.

Jamie Manderson received his sentence at Swindon Magistrates on July 24th, after being disqualified from driving every year since 1988.

Mr Manderson received a five-month sentence for his latest offence, when he was caught driving a BMW without car insurance and while banned.

The 33-year-old has previously been labelled "Britain's worst driver" and his tally of 48 offences of driving while disqualified has been described as "unique".

The serial offender has almost 200 convictions to his name, the majority of which are related to motoring, and admits to having been addicted to heroin.

In his defence, Mr Manderson's solicitor told magistrates that the defendant has a "serious addiction to cars".

After the court case solicitor Rob Ross said: "Jamie is a likeable idiot, really. Jamie suffers from a very serious addiction to cars. He just can't leave them alone.

"During the 1980s he used to steal cars to order and he made a lot of money.

"Then, a few years ago, he got addicted to heroin, but it's the cars he's really hooked on. He just doesn't understand the words 'don't drive'," he added.

In one of his worse crimes Mr Manderson ran over a 12-year-old cyclist as he drove a getaway vehicle.

The club bouncer has now been handed an additional two-year driving ban on top of his prison sentence.
