26 July 2006 Email safely while you drive

A new innovation that allows drivers to send and receive emails without using their hands or eyes has been launched.

The iLane system is compatible with Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as BlackBerries, and its makers are hailing it as a safe way to stay in touch while driving.

Intelligent Mechatronic Systems (IMS) say the iLane is "the world's first hands-free and eyes-free email solution for in-vehicle use".

The innovation works by connecting to a device and reading out any emails you may have received in a 'natural sounding voice'.

It can also take commands for creating and sending emails and text messages.

Some critics argue that although the device is hands-free there is still an increased level of distraction, leading to accidents and more claims to car insurance providers.

However, IMS says many drivers still use handheld devices when driving because they are simply too busy to stop and the iLane means they will at least have their eyes on the road.

"It's a safer alternative to pulling a PDA or smart phone out of your pocket," iLane product manager Ben Miners told E-Commerce Times.

The iLane is being marketed as a safe way of staying in touch while driving and will initially only be available to niche market field workers.
