25 July 2006 In the wrong place, all the time

The owner of a bed and breakfast near Carlisle is campaigning for road safety measures to be introduced near her home after enduring a series of expensive accidents.

Deborah Wearing's home in Brookside has been hit by tractors, lorries and cars, with one incident seeing a lorry smash through her window.

Ms Wearing continually has to make claims on her home insurance and as the accidents increase in frequency her premiums continue to rise.

The bed and breakfast sits at a busy corner of the A69, making it a prime spot for accidents.

"There have been half a dozen articulated vans in the last 15 years, as well as quite a few cars," says Ms Wearing.

"Last week an out-of-control car careered into my railings. It's quite a dangerous corner, even at 30 miles an hour.

"Three-quarters of the railings and the whole of a tree were knocked down. The tree was ten foot tall, but it wouldn't survive. I've already replaced the railings numerous times," she adds.
Miss Wearing has even had trouble getting people to fix the damage done because the road is too dangerous.

"One of the contractors who came out this week said he wouldn't be prepared to put his workers here without traffic lights.

"Something's just got to be done about this road. We can't keep having all this damage done to this property," she added.
A local councillor has joined Ms Wearing's campaign and is calling for traffic calming measures to be introduced.
