24 July 2006 More time spent in company cars

Research shows that people are spending longer in their cars as vehicles increasingly play the role of a mobile office.

The survey, carried out by Lex Leasing Vehicles and Ipsos Mori, shows many company car drivers are risking making a claim on their car insurance by spending at least two hours a day on the road and multi-tasking while there.

Advances in technology have allowed many drivers to use gadgets in order to make their driving experience easier and less stressful, with 36 per cent saying they use a satellite navigation system.

Worryingly a further 64 per cent of company car drivers admit that they are not concentrating solely on the road while behind the wheel.

"Drivers are increasingly doing more behind the wheel as the vehicle becomes a focal point in the working day," says Jon Walden, managing director of Lex Vehicle Leasing.

"While advances in technology allow us to do everyday tasks on the road more easily, there's a concern that Britain's roads are stressful, congested places.

"Better in-car technology certainly helps, but more could be done," he adds.

A large number of motorists believe driving on the UK's roads has become more stressful in the past five years, with 73 per cent of respondents saying so, while 86 per cent agree that the roads are too congested.

Despite the increased stress experienced by many company car drivers, 66 per cent revealed that they still enjoy being behind the wheel.
