21 July 2006 Husband jailed after mistress crashes car

A man has been jailed for lying to police after his mistress crashed his car into a Mercedes.

Gareth Stennett was sentenced to four months behind bars by a judge in Guildford after attempting to deceive police in order to prevent his wife finding out about his affair, reports website icSurreyOnline.

Mr Stennett had allowed his lover to drive his Peugeot around a car park while she did not have a licence.

The woman lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked Mercedes, causing £7,000 worth of damage.

In order to ensure the costs would be covered by his car insurance, Mr Stennett quickly swapped seats with his mistress and reported the incident to police a few days later.

"Witnesses saw a woman get out of the car, and the defendant got out of the passenger side and drove the car away," said Simon Shannon, the prosecutor in the case.

Mr Stennett was handed a four month prison sentence for perverting the course of justice.
