20 July 2006 Burglaries and car crime reduced
Government figures show crime in the UK did not rise in the 12 months leading to March of this year.Official recorded crime statistics demonstrate a drop in the number of victims in many areas, including burglary and vehicle crime.
There was an impressive seven per cent decrease in the number of domestic burglaries reported, meaning less claims had to be made on home insurance policies.
Violent crime was reduced by 13 per cent and vehicle crime saw a three per cent decline.
Advances made in car security could have something to do with the fall in vehicle crime, as drivers invest in better systems to ensure they do not become a victim and have to claim on their car insurance.
"Overall the picture presented by these statistics is positive, and is testament to the considerable work that has been put into crime reduction initiatives across the criminal justice system," commented home secretary John Reid.
However, despite the positive figures, Mr Reid feels many people in Britain still do not feel safe, something he feels needs to be tackled.
"People need to feel that crime has fallen and feel safer in their communities. I believe this is beginning to happen. But we are not complacent and will continue to ensure that we reduce not only actual crime but also the fear of crime," he added.
Some areas of crime did see increases in the last 12 months, with robberies up 13 per cent and recorded drug offences increasing by 23 per cent.
