20 July 2006 Highways officers 'make roads safer'

Highways Agency officers have been drafted in to make the A14 in Cambridgeshire a safer place for drivers.

Lane improvements are due to start in 2009, but the road is said to be both congested and dangerous, reports the Cambridge Evening News.

It is hoped that the introduction of the officers will make the road safer, reducing the number of accidents that occur and the number of car insurance claims that are made.

The officers' roles will vary, from being able to attend to accident scenes quickly, to clearing debris from the road to prevent further incidents.

"This is good news for drivers in Cambridgeshire," said roads minister Dr Stephen Ladyman.

"Traffic officers are already playing an increasingly important role on our motorways, freeing up valuable police resources, making sure our roads are safer and traffic is kept moving."

Police in the region have welcomed the move, stating that the extra resources could be channelled into other areas.

The A14 does not have a hard shoulder, so motorists are asked to allow the officers' cars to pass through the middle lane.
