18 July 2006 Child seat laws fast approaching
New laws concerning the use of child seats in cars are to be introduced in September and motorists are being warned to make sure they are prepared.
The law, which will make it compulsory for children to use child or booster seats, has been welcomed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
However, the organisation is encouraging drivers to do something about it now so that they are not caught short when the rule is brought in.
"This will be a major change for many parents," said Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA.
"They need to look at the proposals as soon as they can rather than leaving things until the last minute.
"This law will make children much safer in cars and should lead to a reduction in deaths and injuries on our roads," he added.
The new rules state that children under the age of 12 must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in the front of the vehicle.
Those aged between three and 11 must be wearing a restraint when in the back of the vehicle and rear-facing child restraints must not be used when there is an airbag in the front.
All of the rules concerning age only apply if the child is less than 4ft 5in tall.
The new rules are due to be introduced in September this year and failure to comply will be seen as an illegal act.
