18 July 2006 Football star fined for car insurance offence
Premier League footballer Craig Bellamy has been fined after he failed to produce a car insurance certificate.
The 27-year-old Liverpool striker was pulled over by police while driving a hired Mercedes in Cardiff.
He did not give police his insurance documents when asked and then failed to hand them into the local station within 14 days, leading to the Wales international being taken to court.
Bellamy, who cost Liverpool £6 million when they bought him from Blackburn Rovers this summer, was handed a fine after his lawyers provided the insurance documents in court.
He was ordered by a judge in Cardiff to pay a fine of £50, as well as court fees of £40.
Although the fine is unlikely to make much of a dent in the £45,000 per week that Bellamy is paid, the fine could have a big impact on drivers who earn more typical wages and serves as a warning that not providing car insurance documents when required is a serious matter.
A court official told website icWales: "Apparently it was a hire car and he had problems obtaining a copy of the insurance to cover him for the date in question.
"He has pleaded guilty to failing to produce [an insurance certificate] but the substantive matter has now been dismissed."
Bellamy did not attend the court hearing, instead he was training with his new Liverpool team mates.
