17 July 2006 Advice issued to avoid motorcycle collisions
Motorists are being offered some advice when it comes to avoiding collisions with motorcyclists. The number of bikes on our roads is increasing as people seek to benefit from the size of the vehicles, which means not getting stuck in traffic.
However, it is the size of motorbikes that can often cause problems, with motorists finding them notoriously difficult to spot, which can lead to collisions and car insurance claims.
To help drivers avoid this situation, the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) has launched a campaign aimed at raising awareness concerning motorbikes on the road.
A series of adverts are to be broadcast under the slogan "Sorry mate I didn't see you", which the IAM says are too often the last words heard by bikers before they are taken away in an ambulance.
The advice offered mainly centres on issues such as checking for motorcycles when emerging at a junction and allowing them to pass your car when stuck in traffic.
The real message, however, is simply to stay aware and avoid being involved in a crash by checking your mirrors and taking the extra time to ensure there is not a motorbike approaching.
