17 July 2006 F1 for two

If you fancy experiencing the break-neck speeds and thrill-a-minute twists and turns of Formula 1 racing without paying huge car insurance premiums and running the risk of making a claim to your provider, then the latest two-seater concept car is for you.

Billed as 'the hottest seat in motorsport', the Grand Prix Masters' series offers passengers an up close and personal view of life as an F1 driver.

A second cockpit has been added to the vehicle which contains a 3.3-litre Nicholson McLaren Cosworth V8 engine and has been designed so that the extra passenger will not affect performance.

"Because our race car has a really strong and spacious carbonfibre chassis, we knew it would be possible to extend it enough to allow a second, separate, passenger compartment without harming the car's integrity or performance in any way," said engineering manager Nick Carpernter.

What makes the car stand out above previous two-seaters is the positioning of the passenger's seat.

In the past those in the back had a view of little more than the driver's head, but this latest design includes a raised passenger cockpit, offering a unique view of the track.

"In terms of the passenger experience, we really believe this will be the best two-seater grand prix car you could imagine," claimed Mr Carpenter.

"We've sat them up high to get the best possible view," he continued. "And, from a safety perspective, we have gone down the more time-consuming and expensive route of building a bespoke car which, at the end of the day, means the passenger will be as safe as a driver would be in a standard car."
