13 July 2006 4x4s to be hit with increased congestion charge

New plans for London's congestion charge could reduce the number of cars on the road even further.

Despite recent positive results released by Transport for London concerning congestion and pollution in the zone, the mayor of London has announced that new plans may be introduced to hit gas-guzzling vehicles.

Drivers of 4x4s may be charged £25 for the privilege of driving in London, a vast increase on the £8 charge which is currently in place.

The move is likely to anger those who drive 4x4s and may lead to less cars taking to the road, which in turn will reduce the potential for accidents and car insurance claims.

The anger felt by owners is countered with joy on the part of the group against the vehicles, the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, which is overjoyed by with the news.

"We are delighted that the Mayor has taken on the problems caused by big, gas-guzzling cars in our city with so much enthusiasm," said spokesperson for the alliance Sian Berry.

"We look forward to seeing these measures finally doing something positive to drive wasteful, dirty, unnecessary 4x4s off our streets.

"There is simply no place for these monsters in our cities and the evidence shows that financial penalties, like a £25 congestion charge, will make a real difference.

"Our report to the Mayor last month demonstrated that a higher charge could deter up to 40 per cent of 4x4s from coming into central London," she added.

A public consultation is to be held with the mayor to see if the proposals are popular among the majority of Londoners.
