12 July 2006 Pope picks Volvo

If you are looking for a safe car to avoid having to make lots of car insurance claims, then you could do worse than choose the one which has been given the blessing of the pope.

Pope Benedict XVI has selected the Volvo XC90 SUV as his latest popemobile and continues a long-standing relationship between his holiness and the car maker.

The XC90 was delivered to the pope and handed over in a short ceremony in the Vatican on June 28th.

The vehicle has a V8 engine and is dark blue with a light interior, but probably what attracted him the most were the safety features.

"We are absolutely happy and proud of the opportunity we had to give a car to the pope," said Pascal Bellemans, president of Volvo Auto Italia Safety

"Safety has always been a no-compromise must for Volvo; no doubt, our strong commitment to safeguard lives could not get a higher and more touching recognition," he added.

The latest popemobile is available for £46,325, and despite its good safety record, the vehicle is less friendly when it comes to emissions - the XC90 produces 322g/km of CO2.
