10 July 2006 Barbeques can lead to disaster
Homeowners are being told to take care when having barbeques this summer. As the hot weather begins to grip the nation more Brits will be spending their evenings and weekends cooking outside.
However, the dangers of using a barbeque incorrectly are lost on some and a disaster could lead to serious personal injury or fire damage to your house and therefore a claim on your home insurance.
Fire services up and down the country are warning residents to take extra precautions when using a barbeque, particularly if children and pets are around at the time.
Some top tips include making sure the device is in good working order, keeping youngsters and animals a safe distance away and avoiding cooking while under the influence of alcohol.
"Accidents can easily happen and I would urge the public to read the instructions and safety advice supplied with all barbecues to be sure they are using them correctly," John Parker from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue told the Welwyn and Hatfield Times.
County councillor Keith Emsall added: "Following the safety advice can make the day safe and enjoyable."
Statistics show that every year around 30 people are injured as a result of gas-grill fires and explosions.
