10 July 2006 Oh brother!
Two brothers have demonstrated that blood is thicker than mortar after one ended up destroying part of the other's house.Rekha and Mukesh Shah are brothers and neighbours in Oadby, Leicester. Rekha so admired the extension that his brother had on his house that he decided he would like one himself.
Unfortunately, after his brother had dug a hole to lay the foundations, Mukesh's 1970s extension collapsed into it.
"There was a huge crashing sound, like a load of bricks being thrown into a skip," said a neighbour.
"It was followed by shouting and screaming, and I ran out into the street to see what was happening. It was complete and utter pandemonium.
"I looked across the street and said to myself, 'Oh, God'. There were bricks still falling, and you could see the bed in Mukesh's son's bedroom."
Both families managed to scramble to safety as the collapse began and fire crews were on the scene within minutes to cordon off the area and ensure gas, water and electricity supplies were isolated.
Although the incident means Mukesh will have to make a claim on his home insurance, the brothers remain friends and have been working together to clean up the mess.
