06 July 2006 Police punish car insurance avoiders
Leicestershire Police is the latest in a line of British forces to announce a crackdown on drivers that do not have car insurance.Officers are warning motorists that if they do not get their cars and vans insured they face having their vehicles crushed, reports BBC News.
As well as seeking uninsured cars, police will also be on the look out for those with invalid MOT certificates and a lack of tax.
Police officers have been given the authority to clamp and remove vehicles which do not have the required certificates and if they go unclaimed, the vehicles can then be destroyed.
Leicestershire Police says so far it has clamped 25 cars, with only five being claimed back.
Northwest Leicestershire Council says the message is simple and the operation will go on.
"Get your vehicles taxed, get an MOT and insurance because we will continue this and we do intend to stop this practice," said Councillor Gordon Tacey.
Similar clampdown schemes have recently been launched on drivers without car insurance in Northern Ireland and Wigan.
