05 July 2006 In-car hazards are highlighted

A list of in-car hazards which could be risking the lives of drivers and other road users has been released.

Car-leasing firm Masterlease has compiled the document which details some of the things drivers have done behind the wheel that could have ended in disaster, reports Fleet Newsnet.

Among them is the story of a driver who got their hand stuck in a Pringles tube while driving.

Somehow the motorist managed to stay in control of their vehicle, but the story could have had a much more sombre ending.

Other tales include a driver who almost crashed into another car when they spilt a milkshake on their lap and attempted to clean it up while still moving.

Another managed to avoid tragedy despite losing control of her vehicle when she tried to save a tub of ice cream which had fallen over.

The list has been released with the serious message that drivers should pay attention to the road at all times.

"Most people will be able to identify with these stories," said Gavin Jones of Masterlease.

"The split-second decision to focus your attention on something else while driving may seem harmless but is actually extremely dangerous."

A new road safety bill that is currently being passed through parliament would see drivers given points on their licence if they were caught committing an offence like the ones mentioned.

This would lead to higher car and van insurance premiums for those motorists.
