05 July 2006 Residents fear being burgled

A new survey has shown that a large number of people in Peterborough fear having their home burgled.

The findings come despite statistics showing that "very few" are actually victims of crime.

Summer is traditionally a time when more house break-ins are reported as more people leave their windows and doors open, however burglary figures for this summer so far did not match previous years.

One of the reasons behind this may in fact be that more people are making their homes secure and as a consequence reducing home insurance premiums.

Peterborough City Council's community safety manager, Christine Graham, stated: "This survey reflects the national picture where the fear of crime is more prevalent than people's actual experience of crime.

"We recognise that even the fear of crime interferes with the quality of life enjoyed by local people and we are continually working with the police and other organisations to improve the safety and feel of the city," she added.

People who take out improved security measures for their home are more likely to benefit from reduced premiums on their home insurance.
