05 July 2006 Seatbelt message getting across in NI

More people in Northern Ireland are wearing seatbelts than this time last year.

That is according to the latest figures from the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland (DoE) which says both front and back seat passengers have shown an increase.

The research observed 15,499 cars and 23,211 occupants and found that since April 2005 the number of people wearing seatbelts had increased.

All passengers are now more likely to wear a seatbelt, while the number of drivers wearing them remained the same.

The DoE's statistics are a great sign that the message of road safety is getting across to drivers in the country and increased caution is likely to lead to a reduction in claims on car insurance.

The survey found that 93 per cent of drivers and front seat passengers were wearing seatbelts in April 2006, in comparison to 92 per cent of front passengers in 2005.

An increase in the number of people wearing seatbelts can be seen across the board, with backseat passengers, children and adults all more likely to wear a restraint than in previous years.
