04 July 2006 "Britain's worst driver" in 48th court appearance
A motorist is facing jail after being caught driving while banned for the 48th time.Jamie Manderson, 33, has around 200 convictions for driving offences and has previously been dubbed "Britain's worst driver" by magistrates.
The self-confessed driving addict was caught in a BMW in Swindon, without car insurance, just weeks after he was released from jail for his 47th offence of illegally driving.
Mr Manderson's defence team has blamed his latest crime on his previous addiction to heroin, which has left him unable to walk.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RSPA) has, in the past, described his record as "shocking" and appealed for something to be done to stop him getting behind the wheel illegally again.
"The courts have to try to find some way of changing his behaviour," Roger Vincent from the RSPA told the Swindon Advertiser.
"It's shocking that somebody has got this sort of record and they habitually re-offend.
"We hope the court can come up with some way that he is not a danger to himself or other people," he added.
Mr Manderson has been remanded in custody and is awaiting sentencing.
