04 July 2006 Safer driving DVD launched for youngsters
A new DVD has been released with the aim of helping young drivers avoid hazards on the road. The interactive DVD has been launched by the Highways Agency as it tries to reduce the number of accidents involving drivers under the age of 19.
Featuring cartoon characters Gaz, Shaz and Chaz, Now That's What I Call Worst Hits offers young drivers sound advice on avoiding potential hazards and potentially reducing claims made to car insurance providers.
The Highway Agency's light-hearted approach to the subject is being applauded by many, but the DVD has a serious message that 16-19-year-olds are more likely to be killed or seriously injured on England's motorways than any other age group.
"Young drivers may pride themselves on their fast reactions, but research shows they often fail to spot hazards and are more likely to take risks on the road," says Road Safety Minister Stephen Ladyman.
"Every death or injury affects not just those involved, but families and friends too, so everyone - young and old - has a vital role to play in reducing even further the number of accidents on our roads," he adds.
Research by police crash site investigators has highlighted situations in which youngsters are most likely to be involved in a crash. These include when overtaking on a roundabout, when making a right turn across traffic and taking bends too fast.
The DVD has the full backing of both the Driving Standards Agency and the Department for Transport's Think! road safety campaign.
It is available to organisations that work closely with young people and features the voice of Tom Baker, famous to the majority of youngsters for being the voice of Little Britain.
