04 July 2006 Weather advice for motorists
As Britain is gripped by a heat wave, the Highways Agency has compiled some useful advice which could help prevent accidents on the road.As temperatures soar, drivers and passengers can become dehydrated and drowsy, which can lead to crashes and car insurance claims.
Motorists are being advised to have a bottle of water in their car, in order to avoid feeling the ill effects of the hot weather.
"Drivers and their passengers, including pets, can become dehydrated in their vehicles during hot weather and carrying water can help them deal with high temperatures," said an Agency spokesperson.
"We want travellers to not suffer discomfort from the effects of dehydration."
Other problems may arise as the heat wave continues, with weather experts predicting a period of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
This can lead to reduced visibility for drivers and the agency is urging drivers to go slowly and keep a safe distance from the car in front.
Motorists are also being urged to check their brakes thoroughly after driving through water and should check the weather forecast before setting off on a journey.
If adverse weather, such as very heavy rain, is reported then drivers are encouraged to avoid setting off unless the journey is vital.
