03 July 2006 University launches driver index

A new initiative has been launched to improve road safety which could have a positive effect on car insurance premiums.

The online driver risk index (DRI), put together by experts at Cranfield University, uses a series of psychometric tests to analyse motorists' strengths and weaknesses.

The information is then used to advise drivers on how they can improve their driving and make the roads a safer place.

"Our mission as a university is to offer a service to the community," said Neil Godfrey from the university.

"By making the DRI available to the general public, we are fulfilling our aim by increasing awareness of the effects of driver behaviour on road safety," he added.

As well as improving driving ability by taking the test, motorists can do a host of other things to increase safety on the roads.

Gaining advanced driver qualifications, such as the Driving Standards Agency's Pass Plus, can help reduce accidents and lead to lower insurance premiums.
