29 June 2006 New protection system for vans and SUVs

A new innovation has been launched to make SUVs and vans less dangerous.

An energy absorbing plastic front has been designed that, it is claimed, will save lives and reduce serious injuries to other, more vulnerable, road users.

The creation is designed to make vans and SUVs safer and could therefore, reduce car and van insurance premiums.

The revolutionary new plastic frontal protection system is designed by UK car parts supplier Concept Mouldings and tests on the product have returned excellent results.

Originally, the risk of sustaining head injuries during a collision with a van or SUV was over 99 per cent in the worst case, but with the protection that figure was reduced to just two per cent.

"One of the most exciting aspects of our results is that because our products can be fitted as an aftermarket product by owners of vehicles we can start saving lives and serious injuries now rather than waiting for a long term legislative process", said Ian Finney, managing director of Concept Mouldings.

"The benefits are also likely to continue as vehicle design improves. For example, the results of testing our product on current vehicles are even better than on vehicles produced ten years ago."

The system works by protecting pedestrians from hard parts of the front of vehicles, such as the bonnet, radiator and engine.

Information on the new products will be available on the Concept Mouldings exhibition stand at the British International Motor Show between July 20th and July 30th.
