29 June 2006 Ensure you are insured at festivals

As the festival season gets going, revellers are being warned to ensure they are covered against theft or damage of possessions suffered outside the home.

The popularity of summer music festivals is growing, but so too are thefts at such events and although people are happy to shell out hundreds of pounds for their tickets, they are not so forthcoming when it comes to insurance.

Website moneysupermarket.com is warning travelling fans to check over their home insurance policy to see if they are covered against theft of their possessions outside the home.

"If you're camping at the festival itself and taking valuables with you, such as mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras, then insuring these personal possessions against loss, damage or theft should be top of your list," says Richard Mason, director of insurance at the website.

"Many insurers offer cover for personal possessions outside the home, but you need to check the terms and conditions carefully to ensure the cover level is adequate for what you are taking with you," he adds.

As well as making sure your belongings are covered by your home insurance, there are a number of other tips which moneysupermarket.com says could save you a lot of time and effort.

Keeping your most valuable possessions with you at all times will reduce the risk of them being stolen, while staying with a group of friends will make you less likely to be targeted.

Of course the best way to ensure your most prized possessions do not get stolen is to not take them at all, so things like expensive jewellery should probably be left at home.
