29 June 2006 Drivers' habits are changing

New research shows European motorists are changing their driving habits as a result of high fuel prices.

The poll found that 60 per cent of drivers in Britain, France and Germany feel they drive more conservatively, which could help to reduce car insurance claims.

Many people say they have reduced the number of non-essential trips they make, meaning there should be fewer vehicles on the road and therefore a reduced chance of being involved in an accident.

The survey, carried out by Maritz Research, also found that more than 11 per cent of those questioned had moved home or changed job in order to be closer to work.

More than half said fuel prices would affect the size of the vehicle they bought in the future, while 30 per cent had considered or already had bought a smaller vehicle.

Car companies have noted a change in attitude among motorists, with more people opting to buy cars with less powerful engines.

Although European drivers are clearly considering the effects of higher fuel prices, car-pooling remains relatively unpopular.
