29 June 2006 Drivers given car crime prevention tips

Drivers visiting Glasshoughton Retail Park in West Yorkshire, are being warned against the dangers of leaving possessions on display in their cars.

West Yorkshire Police is offering motorists tips on preventing their vehicles being broken into, and therefore avoiding making a claim on their car insurance.

Officers from the City and Towns Neighbourhood Policing Team (CTNPT) will be at the retail park handing out information and advice on car crime prevention.

"The aim of the day is to make people aware of the property that they leave in vehicles and the potential to have it stolen," says Sergeant Paul Coates from the CTNPT.

"Having your car broken into is a very distressing, annoying experience and can cause a lot of inconvenience. People may be without a car for some time waiting for repairs to be done or insurance to be settled," he adds.

Although it is vital that car owners are covered against theft, the message from officers will be that preventing crime is the best option.

"A few simple steps can make life much more difficult for criminals. Don't leave any property on display and don't keep valuables in your car boot," says Sergeant Coates.

"Remember to lock your vehicle at all times and remove satellite navigation systems and the front of car stereos where possible. Steering locks and security devices also work as a good deterrent for thieves," he concludes.

The officers will be taking the registration numbers of people who leave possessions on display in their car and passing them on to the DVLA who will then send the owner a crime prevention pack.
