28 June 2006 House destroyed by digger

A couple are counting their lucky stars that they have home insurance after a crazed man demolished their £250,000 house with a mechanical digger.

Janice Gledhill and James Harvard's home has been almost completely destroyed, while two of their cars also suffered damage when the driver turned his attention to them.

It appears that the man, identified as a 50-year-old heavy plant operator from Essex, was seeking revenge after being asked to pay £1,000 in rent which he owed the couple for a pitch at their caravan park.

Ms Gledhill was in the house when the destruction began and was lucky to escape with her life. The 52-year-old said she awoke to see the digger charging towards the house and promptly called the police.

"He started on the house. It was quickly destroyed. He just smashed his way around it," she said.

"He also destroyed a police car and then our cars. We are just devastated; there's got to be about £500,000 worth of damage," she added.

As well as the financial losses resulting from the rampage, the couple have been left devastated by the fact that a number of pets were inside the house at the time, with one cat remaining missing and feared dead.

Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and criminal damage.
